Today, we would also like to take the opportunity to introduce some of our speakers to you:

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Achim Dittler: Moderation

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Achim Dittler is a leading expert in mechanical process engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He specializes in gas-particle systems, focusing on the development of advanced filtration methods to improve air quality.

His research addresses the reduction of fine dust and other harmful particle emissions, contributing to environmental protection and public health.

Dr. Josef Cyrys: Aircraft-Related UFP Exposure and Health Effects in Children – An Epidemiological Study in Berlin and Brandenburg Using a Crossover Design

Dr. Josef Cyrys is a Senior Scientist at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. He leads the research group “Environmental Exposure Assessment” and the “Joint Center for Environmental Exposure Sciences”, a common project of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and University of Augsburg. Within the framework of this project, an aerosol measurement station for detailed physical and chemical characterization of fine and ultrafine particles is operated in Augsburg since 2004. His work focuses on the physical and chemical characterization of ambient aerosol, the estimation of long- and short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants over space and time and the development of exposure methods for use in epidemiological studies.

Dr. Benjamin Michen: Working with Passive Samplers

Dr. Benjamin Michen is the Technical Lead at Passam AG, where he directs Research and Development, Quality Management, and Sustainability initiatives. Under his guidance, Passam AG has established itself as a leader in innovative air quality monitoring solutions, particularly through the use of passive sampling technology. This method enables precise measurement of a wide range of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds.

In addition to his role at Passam AG, Dr. Michen actively contributes to shaping industry standards. He serves as the convenor of the working group for diffusive sampling within the EU’s technical committee for air quality (CEN/TC 264 WG11). Through this role, he helps ensure that Passam AG remains aligned with the latest innovations and regulatory requirements in air quality monitoring.

Jim Mills: Large City Hybrid Air Quality Networks

Jim Mills is the Managing Director of Scotswolds Ltd, a consultancy focused on air quality monitoring technology for outdoor and indoor environments. With a background in industrial chemistry and chemical engineering, Mills has built a distinguished career in the environmental sector. As a founding member of the Environmental Industries Association (EIA), Mills has contributed to shaping air quality policies and technologies. He chairs the Air Quality Working Group and serves as a representative for Scotland. Mills is also active with Environmental Protection Scotland (EPS) and has chaired the scientific committee for the UK‘s largest air quality and emissions conference, AQE.

Jeffery Smith: New Insights Leading to the WHO Air Quality Guidelines

Jeffery K. Smith is a Senior Advisor for Global Clean Air at the Ella Roberta Foundation as well as a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO). As an environmental health expert, his work focuses on improving air quality and addressing the health impacts of environmental factors. He collaborates with international organizations to develop and implement strategies for reducing air pollution and enhancing public health globally. Smith is recognized for his commitment to creating clean and healthy environments through innovative solutions and strategic advisement.

Dr. Martine Van Poppel: Importance of Standardization of Sensor Systems

Dr. Martine Van Poppel is Senior Scientist in the Air Quality Measurements team at VITO (Flemish Institute for Technological Research) in Belgium. Initially, her work focused on vehicle emissions and clean technologies, later expanding to urban air quality, mobile monitoring, personal exposure, and air quality sensor evaluation.

She has led projects like sensEURcity (testing sensors in Antwerp, Oslo, Zagreb) and contributed to initiatives such as airQmap for black carbon monitoring and citizen science efforts. As convenor of CEN TC 264 WG42, she develops European standards for air quality sensors, providing governments and companies with tools to assess and improve air quality.

Dr. Claus Zehner: Perspectives of Remote Sensing with the Latest ESA Sentinel Generation

Dr. Claus Zehner is the Mission Manager for the Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P) mission at the European Space Agency (ESA), specifically within the ESA/ESRIN center. He has been involved with ESA since 1993 and has a longstanding career in satellite missions focused on atmospheric monitoring. Sentinel-5P is part of the Copernicus program and is dedicated to monitoring the Earth‘s atmosphere, providing critical data on air quality, ozone levels, and climate variables. Dr. Zehner‘s work is pivotal in ensuring the successful operation and data delivery of the Sentinel-5P mission, which is crucial for tracking pollutants and supporting environmental policies across Europe.
