In our fast-paced modern life, people tend to spend most of their time indoors, whether they are working, studying or relaxing – good indoor air quality is an important factor in ensuring our health. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that atmospheric particulate pollution is closely related to a wide range of diseases. The smaller the particle size, the deeper it can penetrate into the human body, e.g. particles smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) are able to enter the alveoli, while particles smaller than 0.1 μm (i.e. ultrafine particles) are thought to be able to penetrate the alveoli and enter the body’s blood circulation system. On the other hand, many urban populations around the world have been exposed to high concentrations of fine dust for a long time, and the Global Health Guidelines for Air Quality issued by the World Health Organisation in 2021 is the first time that ultrafine particles are included in the observation indicators – real-time and accurate ambient air particulate monitoring has been extended from the mass concentration to the concentration of the number of fine particles, which has put forward a new endeavour to improve the public’s health awareness. Portable small particle size spectrometer will help the efforts in this direction.
