As early as 2017, the Automotive Testing Laboratory affiliated to BASF Performance Materials Asia Pacific Engineering Plastics Innovation Center ordered the Palas® HMT 1000 heatable modular test system for oil mist separators. In conversation the engineer in charge shared his experience of using Palas® HMT 1000 and talked about the outstanding technology of the product.

Oil Mist Separation Test in BASF Automotive Testing Laboratory
The BASF Automotive Testing Laboratory provides level tests and experiments of engineering auto parts for customers such as OEM parts suppliers, with particular emphasis on powertrain and oil mist separation. In order to better conduct experiments, BASF in China was looking for a solution to provide reliable measurement results. Since the colleagues in the French headquarter had good experience using Palas® instruments and recommended it, the Automotive Testing Laboratory in China decided to trust Palas® HMT 1000.
Provide Leading Measurements Technology to Meet the Higher Standards
“Our oil mist separation tests have been started since 2017, and Palas® HMT 1000 has been helping us for about 4 years. We have used this device in order to perform oil mist separation tests, which the single use of HMT 1000 is enough for the current test requirements”, the BASF engineer explains. The main purpose of the laboratory using the modular test system, HMT 1000, is to perform oil mist separation measurements, for example, the separation of blow-by aerosols in internal combustion engines, or the separation of oil mist downstream of compressors. HMT 1000 can quickly and accurately use the isothermal particle measurement method for testing at temperatures up to 120°C. What convinced BASF was that the test results obtained by using the HMT 1000 can show whether the design of auto parts meets the qualification requirements of the OEM. This is very important, because the recent emission requirements are relatively strict, and laboratories need to measure whether or not the products meet the such high emission standards nowadays.

Palas® Defines A New Method of Measurement
It was the high technological level, that not only convinced the French engineers, but also the Chinese colleagues in the BASF Automotive Testing Laboratory: “Palas® has the leading technical principle of the instrument. Most domestic measuring instruments use the quantitative gravimetric determinations method, and data analysis is performed by weighing the oil consumption. However, the oil consumption may cause errors in many steps of the experimental process. Conventional quantitative gravimetric determinations are often not quick or sensitive enough and provide no information about the particle size distribution. The testing system of HMT 1000 is advanced, which can reduce the error in the measuring process. Thanks to the excellent correlation between the quantitative distribution measurement and the gravimetric analysis, very fast and volume-relevant testing of the oil mist separators is assured. For example, the determination of the clean mist concentration can be performed within 1 minute using the Promo®1000 H system that is occupied on HMT 1000.”
Innovative Technology, Stable Measurement
The heart of the HMT 1000 is the scattered-light aerosol spectrometer Promo® 1000 H, which measures the particle size, the number of particles, and therefore the concentration, independently of each other but at the same time. Achieving stability and accuracy at high temperatures is an important part of the measurement process. With Promo® 1000 H, HMT 1000 is equipped with isothermal measurement technology, which effectively solves the problems of low accuracy and low reliability of measuring oil mist separation rate. “Palas® highlights the leading technical advantages of HMT 1000 based on its measurement principle. HMT 1000 is no doubt an innovative product in the field”, the engineer from the laboratory says.

Long-Term Stability for Technological Innovation
“At present, we have been using HMT 1000 for a long time, and the performance of the instrument has been very stable over the past four years.” Nowadays, the use frequency of HMT 1000 in the laboratory has been increasing, not only because components are working under higher temperatures in diesel vehicles, but also due to the increasingly stringent requirements of customers. Out of the affirmation of Palas®’s technology and service, the engineer of the laboratory is communicating with Palas® recently to customize an instrument suitable for higher temperature measurement based on the existing HMT 1000. “Palas® instruments can not only meet the current industry demand for parts production, but will also lead technological innovation in the future!”, the engineer is convinced.
