With the deeper concept of environmental protection, companies have to meet emission standards. Oil mist separators for forced crankcase ventilation can help them achieve it. It can reduce the emission of blow-by so that the processing pressure of the end purification will be reduced. The China VII vehicle emission standards will take effect in the future. So OEMs and manufacturers of oil mist separators for crankcase ventilation are paying attention to the filtration performance of the oil mist separators. The gravimetric method for efficiency analysis through weighing the oil consumption often fails to make accurate characterization. The Palas® HMT 1000 filtration performance test rig uses the principle of the isothermal particle measurement method. It can overcome this challenge effectively and has already been recognized by filtration system supplier Donaldson in 2013. In the meanwhile, Palas® HMT 1000 has been used by several filtration test companies and laboratories as a trusted choice for filtration performance testing of oil mist separators.
Widely-acclaimed Palas® filtration test
Donaldson, a provider of filtration systems, has developed a closed crankcase ventilation system to help maintain high performance in reciprocating piston engines. During combustion, the blow-by gases reach the crankcase through the piston rings. The gases are contaminated by oil, fuel and soot particles. For reasons of environmental protection, Donaldson closed system reintroduces these blow-by gases back into the intake area of the engine. These gases go through a closed circuit with the help of a blow-by gas filter.
To verify the reliability of Palas® HMT 1000 filtration tests for oil mist separators, Donaldson developers use the instrument under practice and laboratory conditions. They accomplished laboratory measurements with the welas® digital 1000 aerosol spectrometer and the dilution system LDD 100 H, both being integrated into the HMT 1000 test rig. Meanwhile, measurements were carried out with the same spectrometer and dilution system directly at an engine test rig of a truck manufacturer.
The data showed that the particle size distribution, concentration and separation efficiency information provided by the Palas® HMT 1000 was in good agreement with the field test data. So the high filtration efficiency of the oil mist separator.
Not only has Palas® filtration testing been approved by Donaldson, but Palas® has been a partner of Fleetguard India for 20 years. Palas® HMT 1000 supports the Fleetguard R&D team. Fleetguard India customized the mobile transport case and a snap-in connection unit. This allowed the aerosol spectrometer and the dilution system in the Palas® HMT 1000 to be easily connected directly to the engine for rapid tests. In addition, the MFP 3000 M filter media test rig for the engine intake with Palas® FTD 3000 is helping Fleetguard India to further improve filter media filtration performance and provide experimental data.
Practical Palas® solutions
The Palas® HMT 1000 has been used by many laboratories or testing centres to help grasp the separation efficiency of oil mist separators. To further simulate the performance of the oil mist separator under real working conditions (micro-negative pressure conditions), the State Key Laboratory of Engine and Powertrain System chose the Palas® HMT 1000 P test rig. The solution provides the lab with a control function for an additional ±200 mbar upstreaming absolute pressure control function. Users can also finish the classification efficiency measurement of samples at an upstreaming absolute pressure value of less than 900 mbar. What’s more, uses can further determine the effectiveness of product improvement solutions through the simulated filtration performance under the same conditions as the actual working conditions. This provides strong data support for the R&D team.
