Palas® HMT 1000: Highly Effective Response to T/JNM 0001-2024 New Standard for Performance Test of Oil Mist Separators for Internal Combustion Engines

With the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the continuous development of the automotive industry, the performance testing of oil mist Separators (also known as breathers) for internal combustion engines has become the focus of industry attention. The new group standard T/JNM 0001-2024 “Specification for performance testing of oil mist separators for internal combustion engines” issued by Jinan Measurement and Testing Institute, which has been implemented since August 30th, 2024, provides a new guideline and specification for the development of this field. As one of the drafting units of the new standard, Palas® has made significant contributions to the formulation of the standard by its advanced technological strength and rich industry experience. The Palas® HMT 1000 filtration of oil mist separator test system meets the requirements of this new standard, aiming to help enterprises improve the emission performance of engine crankcase ventilation filters and meet the more stringent environmental requirements.

Jinan Measurement and Testing Institute released the T/JNM 0001-2024 new standard.

Palas® participates in the development of new standard T/JNM 0001-2024

Palas® has been working in aerosol technology for 40 years and offers equipment and instruments for generating, treating, measuring, and analyzing aerosolized particulate matter. Based on the principle of isothermal measurement of particulate matter, the Palas® HMT 1000 series of oil mist separator filtration test benches have been widely adopted by many filtration testing companies and laboratories, and have become the trusted choice for oil mist separator filtration performance testing. As a high-quality enterprise in the industry, Palas® is deeply honored to be able to participate in the development of this group standard and contribute to the promotion of the continuous optimization and improvement of the industry standard.

Palas® Flexible and Efficient Testing Solutions Help Industry Solve Critical Problems

More than just participating in the development of standards, the Palas® HMT1000 series of filtration performance test systems are able to address a range of key issues in specific applications, responding to new testing requirements.

HMT1000 Technical features in detail
·   Measurement range (size): 0.18-40 µm
·   Volume flow: 1-25 Nm3/h, 1-85 Nm3/h (others on request)
·   Dimensions: Approx. 1,600 • 2,000 • 800 mm (H • W • D)
·   Differential pressure measurement: 0-5,000 Pa (others on request)
·   Measurement range (number C_N): Up to 107 particles/cm3 with LDD100 H
·   Compressed air supply: 6-8 bar

Firstly, the system accurately measures the classification efficiency of oil mist separators, helping companies to understand the separating capacity of separators in varying sizes of the particle (Approx. 0.18-10 µm) and particle concentrations (approx. 105-107 particles/cm3), as well as at different volumetric flow rates, and providing powerful data to support optimized product design. Secondly, the HMT 1000 test system is mobile and has a modular layout. As a result, the individual components can also be used for other tests and particle measurements, e.g., in-situ measurements on the engine.

Isothermal particle sampling and in situ measurements using Palas® FTControl software for automated measurement data acquisition

At the same time, the heart of the HMT 1000 is the light scattering spectrometer Promo® 1000 HP, which measures the particle size and the number of particles (and therefore the concentration) independently of each other but at the same time. With the aid of the Promo® 1000 HP, it is possible to perform very quick, precise, reproducible, and isothermal measurements. High-speed and volume-relevant oil separator testing are assured thanks to the excellent correlation between the quantitative distribution measurement and the gravimetric analysis. The clean gas concentration can be determined within 1 minute using the Promo® 1000 HP system.

Differences in efficiency determination between isothermal and non-isothermal sampling measurements

Palas® HMT 1000 realizes rapid replacement and combination of test components through modular design, and Promo®1000 HP can quickly adjust the test program according to different test requirements. At the same time, the system is equipped with an advanced automation control system that can automatically execute the test process, evaluate test data, and record test results, greatly improving test efficiency and accuracy.

Automatic measurement process:
·   Automatic evaluation of the pressure loss curve
·   Automatic measurement of the fraction separation efficiency
·   Automatic evaluation of the pressure loss curve under varying burden states, incl. measurement of the fraction separation efficiency
