Helping Scientists draw the right conclusions

Palas® the expert in measurement and characterization of particles in the air is a trusted partner for many research institutions within Mainland China. Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai is one of them for several years too. When the University’s School of Mechanical Engineering needed a reliable particle aerosol particles size spectrometer, the research team opted for the Palas® Promo® 3000. For many reasons: Promo® 3000 is an evolutionary light scattering aerosol spectrometer system for a wide range of particle counting and sizing applications. Incorporating the latest light wave conductor technology, the Promo® 3000 features two sensors for quasi-simultaneous measurements offering advantages for characterizing separators with fluctuating raw gas concentrations. Thanks to its high-temperature resistance the Promo® 3000 aerosol particle size spectrometer enables the team to do monitoring in tough weather conditions, which was highly appreciated by the research team.

A professional measurement program to meet researchers’ needs

In recent years, the School of Mechanical Engineering has done various scientific research projects entrusted by renowned Chinese institutions: the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key R&D Program, the National Major Project, the provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological research projects to name the most important ones. With its influential scientific research, the School of Mechanical Engineering has been done contributing to the progress in many fields such as manufacturing, power, aerospace, and energy.

Reliable even in difficult conditions

For the research team, weather conditions play a role in conducting their monitoring. The Palas® Promo® 3000 aerosol particle sizer is equipped with a pressure and heating module (up to: ≤ 250°C, ≤ 10 bar). It can ensure data sampling under isobaric and isothermal conditions, avoiding the influence of pressure or temperature changes of the sample gas on the aerosol particle size distribution. The independent sensor design is connected to the control unit through optical fiber, which makes the monitoring of aerosols more flexible and convenient. Compared with similar instruments, the stable and reliable performance of the Promo® 3000 meets the scientific research needs of the research team of the School of Mechanical Engineering. So far, the research team has used the Palas® instrument for many years. With its accurate monitoring results and user-friendly application, the systems from Palas® strongly supports the research project.

Advanced technology for research programs

The Promo® 3000 aerosol particle size spectrometer is characterized by its low background counting, accurate particle size measurement (within +/-5% of particle size measurement error), wide particle size measurement range 0.2um~100um, and good count repeat (typically less than 0.5%). It has won the trust of the research team of the School of Mechanical Engineering and became the instrument of choice for a very long time.

Example with 2200 sensor

The Promo® has a new, fast 20 MHz signal processing processor, which analyses the interference of each particle. This makes it possible to recognize coincidental events based on the scattered light signal, i.e. more than one particle in the measurement volume at one time can be identified from the individual signal and corrected. Therefore, the maximum concentration limit can be increased by up to 106 p/cm3 (with the welas® 2070 sensor). In low concentrations < 1 particle/cm3 equipped with the welas® 2500 sensor, this leads to a higher measuring accuracy.

Promo® 3000 offers up to 128 size channels per measuring range. As a standalone measuring device (i.e. without an external computer) measurements can be continuously done because all data can be stored with a maximum temporal resolution of 1s. Promo® can therefore measure and save data over weeks independently. For data transfer, the instrument can also be integrated into a company network. Promo® has a standard interface and can be controlled by a process control system or by a simple LabVIEW program.
