This was the question Palas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> facing at the beginning of its lean management launch. After two years, the first phase of the restructuring processes comes now to the end. The good development of the company confirms that this has set the right course for the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lean management \u2013 for many employees \u2013 <\/strong><strong>means <\/strong><strong>alarm bells, because very often it goes with job losses. \u201cThis is also what the <\/strong>Palas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><strong> employees thought when preparations for restructuring the working processes in the company started two years ago<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u201d Executive Director Leander M\u00f6lter recalls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The starting point was the development of the Fidas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series of fine dust measurement devices. Fidas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> 200 S was to become T\u00dcV certified, as this was the prerequisite for successful sales, especially among public sector customers. This in turn necessitated the introduction of &nbsp;ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, so we made a virtue of necessity and decided to introduce ISO certification along with lean management.<br \/>\n<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4990\" src=\"https:\/\/palas-china.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1-212x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/palas.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/palas.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1-17x24.png 17w, https:\/\/palas.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1-25x36.png 25w, https:\/\/palas.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1-34x48.png 34w, https:\/\/palas.com.cn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u56fe\u7247-1.png 556w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Successful ISO 9001:2008 certification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim was to significantly raise productivity across the company with the recruitment of further staff and expansion of production space,\u201dexplains Authorized Representative Dr.Maximilian Wei\u00df. The structures in the company had to be adapted so that it\u2019s able to produce considerably higher volumes of the respective device groups.<\/p>\n<h6>No directives \u201cfrom above\u201d<\/h6>\n<p>At the first staff meetings, Executive Director M\u00f6lter mainly looked into sceptical faces. \u201cWe could not prove that the T\u00dcV certification would really pan out.\u201d This only changed once further employees had been hired. \u201cFrom there on, the motivation was properly there and everyone stood completely behind the lean management method.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was crucial that directives did not come \u201cfrom above\u201d, but from the employees themselves who were involved in the process from the outset. Together with the management consultant, Gunter Fauth, they analysed in detail all the work steps in their area and made suggestions on how the workflows could be improved. Because, even though the technology is protected with various patents, according to M\u00f6lter, still \u201cthe best protection is the expertise, the knowledge here in the company.\u201d A decision that is also associated with the quality philosophy at Palas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>: \u201cThe products have to work perfectly. We can guarantee this if the devices are manufactured completely here in-house.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6>Guaranteed price stability with enhanced product quality<\/h6>\n<p>The focus of the lean management process was therefore on raising product quality and production efficiency. At the same time, the customer should be able to rely on stable prices. It very quickly became clear that there was also appreciable potential for improving productivity in Purchasing and Warehouse Logistics. After changing the delivery terms and introducing pre-picking for the various measuring devices, the workload for the employees in Production could be markedly reduced. All the required components are now at hand and superfluous trips to the warehouse to obtain a missing screw, for instance, are a thing of the past.<\/p>\n<h6>Changes in organisation had to be learned<\/h6>\n<p>When it comes to their technical knowledge, the employees hardly needed training, they were experts already. What had to be learned was reorientation and changes in organisation. Because lean management means not only more responsibility for the individual employee, but also more rules and more standardised processes. \u201cOnly once everyone adheres does the desired effect show effect. This firstly had to take hold at Palas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u201d explains Dr. Wei\u00df.<\/p>\n<h6>Order volumes noticeably increased<\/h6>\n<p>Not only with the Fidas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series of fine dust measuring devices of which 90 units were produced in 2014, but also in the area of Palas<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> core competence \u2013 filter testing technology \u2013 the demand arising from new developments in the fields of nanoparticle measurement technology and compressed air filter test rigs has also developed very well. The number of employees has doubled over the past five years. \u201cWithout lean management and their high<\/p>\n<p>Motivation,\u201d M\u00f6lter is convinced, \u201cthe company would not have coped with this growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the process is not concluded yet. In all areas, with the support of Gunter Fauth, reviews are carried out to identify whether the agreed processes are working or need to be adapted.
