How to Monitor Air Quality During Transport?

With the continuous development and progress of transport infrastructure in China, public transport such as high-speed trains, airports and subways are making travel more and more convenient for people. However, in a public transport network with a huge flow of people, air quality problems often occur and are not easy to find. For the study on new technologies for air monitoring in transportation. Professor Li Xu from the College of Transportation Engineering at Chang’an University chose Palas® AQ Guard as the air quality monitoring tool for his research project. To create an excellent traffic environment, it is necessary to monitor air quality. Palas® helps Chang’an University to solve the problem of air monitoring in public places with technology.

Palas® Instruments for Research

Chang’an University, or CHD, is a national key university. It is under the direct management of the Ministry of Education and is listed under Project 211, Project 985 Innovation Platform and Double First-Class Project of China. CHD attaches great importance to academic innovation and has created a four-in-one system for scientific and technological innovation, consisting of “great teams, great platforms, significant projects and fruitful achievements”. Scientific research is supported with more than RMB 850 million annually. Every year, more than 110 projects are awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Fund of China. Chang’an University’s College of Transportation Engineering is a key national first-level discipline. Professor Li Xu, who leads this research project, is mainly responsible for research areas such as green ecological technology of transport infrastructure, ecological restoration, intelligent traffic monitoring and biosecurity.

Before the Palas® solution, the coverage of other airborne particle monitoring instruments was limited. They could not meet the requirements of this research project. Professor Li Xu’s scientific research team became aware of the Palas® instrument through the introductory information on the internet. The comprehensive performance and technical service of the monitoring instrument of the German particle monitoring expert palas® met the monitoring requirements of this scientific research project. Furthermore, as an optical particle size spectrometer, the AQ Guard can measure particle size down to a limit of 180nm. The precise measuring range helps to obtain stable data for monitoring air quality in traffic.

Innovative and accurate air monitoring technology

AQ Guard is a robust aerosol spectrometer for outdoor air. It uses the measurement principle of optical scattered light measurement on single particles, based on the technology of the EN 16450 certified Fidas® 200. It can measure PM1, PM2.5, PM4 and PM10 simultaneously and also provides information on particle size distribution and particle number concentration in the range of 175nm-18μm. It provides more references for research and regulatory authorities. A bidirectional connection via standardized protocols such as ASCII or direct transmission via the UDP protocol is easy to implement. For self-sufficient operation, the system can be powered by an external battery with or without solar backup. The unit can be equipped with a weather station to better understand and interpret fine dust emissions and their origin. Sensors for recording temperature, humidity and pressure are integrated as standard. Like all Palas® systems for fine dust measurements, the AQ Guard can also run stably over a long period of time and realize an on-site calibration using monodisperse standard particles.

Palas® has now introduced the new generation of the intelligent aerosol spectrometer AQ Guard. Even more accurate and reliable for the precise tracking of hot spots.
