How Palas® meets the high demands of the National Institute of Metrology

Particulate matter, also called dust, is a variety of solid or liquid particles that are uniformly distributed in an aerosol system. Aerosols in the air are also one of the main transmission pathways of COVID-19. Accurate monitoring data can be obtained through precise particle size analysis. Palas® has provided the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) with SMPS, Promo®, and monitoring tools such as aerosol dilution systems. Palas®, with its stable monitoring data and wide particle size range, supports NIM’s verification activities and related research.

Highly reliable: Palas® Professional Monitoring

Professional Monitoring

NIM’s particle laboratory is responsible for performing measurement standards and traceability of particle monitors, dust particle counters, condensation core counters CPC and aerosol particle size spectrometers. At the same time, testing of filter materials, filters and air cleaners is also performed. How can the numerous metrology and calibration tasks be managed? The Metrology Institute has selected a number of Palas® as its right hand.

One of the main routes of transmission for COVID-19 is via aerosols in the air. Therefore, wearing a mask can effectively prevent transmission. The protective effect of the mask must be checked with a suitable filter tester. Verification and calibration of the filter tester are of utmost importance. Against this background, NIM has selected equipment such as U-SMPS2100X, DC 10000, and UF-CPC 100, Charme® from aerosol monitoring specialist Palas® for respirator filter tester calibration and testing.

To assist measurement and testing experts in the calibration of particulate measurement equipment. Palas® products comply with many standards and norms, such as
·    JJF 1562-2016 “Condensation Nucleus Particle Counter Calibration Specification”
·    JJF 1800-2020 “Specification for the calibration of aerosol photometers”
·    ISO 15900:2009 “Differential electromigration method for measuring aerosol particle size distribution”
·    AR 2626-2019 “Respirators with self-priming filters against particulates”
·    and other relevant specifications

Palas® Technology for NIM Monitoring Needs

The Palas® SMPS, is an advanced nanoparticle measuring system that measures aerosol particle size distributions from 4nm to 1200nm. It provides not only accurate and reliable particle size analysis and counts, but also ensures high resolution in up to 256 size channels. The SMPS series offers a wide range of benefits for aerosol analysis at different concentrations and particle size distributions. For example, it can flexibly integrate with various pre-treatment devices (e.g., dilution device). Its easy-to-use touchscreen enables intuitive operation. With its open data file, it is convenient to access and analyse data for self-testing and calibration. In addition, the device is extremely flexible and compatible with mainstream counters.

Promo® is known for up to 128 size channels per measurement range and a concentration range from < 1 particle/cm3 to 106 particles/cm3. A touch display ensures user-friendly operation. Measurements can be started easily and all data, such as the current number distribution and number concentration as well as 24 other statistical values, can be evaluated and displayed in real-time. With Promo as a standalone instrument (i.e., without an external computer), measurements are taken continuously. All incoming data can be stored with a maximum temporal resolution of 1s. Promo® can therefore measure and store data independently for weeks. Promo® can also be integrated into a company network for data transfer. Promo® has a standard interface and can be controlled by a process control system or by a simple Labview program. Therefore Promo® is particularly well suited for control and monitoring applications. Temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors can be connected.

Palas® Smart Solutions combine accurate and reliable particle size analysis and counting to provide flexible monitoring equipment for particle monitoring. In the future, Palas® will launch additional high-quality, accurate, state-of-the-art environmental monitoring equipment to meet the needs of diverse and accurate monitoring.
