Particle Size Distribution of Aerosols in Ambient Air with Palas® Instrument at Shihezi University

The problem of haze, which is dominated by fine particulate matter, is having an impact on people’s health and daily life. Aerosol particles in atmospheric haze are tiny particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere, which usually range in size from the nanometer to micron level. Although these tiny particles are often overlooked in our daily lives, they have a profound impact on our environment and health. In order to test the aerosol particle size distribution of nano to micron sizes in ambient air, and to further understand and grasp the aerosol particles in the air, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shihezi University utilizes advanced technological tools, especially Palas® U-SMPS 2100 and Fidas® 200, which provide a strong support for the research.

Selection of Research Teams in Higher Education
The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shihezi University has a number of disciplines such as chemistry, environment, materials and chemical engineering, and has been selected as one of the national “double first-class” construction disciplines for many times. The laboratory of the department of environmental engineering and chemical engineering is mainly engaged in environmental monitoring and pollutant control, water pollution control engineering, environmental pollution and human health. The experiment focused on “testing the particle size distribution of aerosols with nano to micron particle size in ambient air”, and the Palas® instrument, with its higher cost performance, became the trustworthy choice for the laboratory of the department of environmental engineering and chemical engineering of Shihezi University for monitoring the quality of ambient air.

Palas® Fidas® 200 meets TÜV and MCERTS approvals
The Fidas series not only provides measurements of PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10, TSP to third parties such as TÜV Rheinland (Europe) DIN EN 15267-1/-2 and MCERTS (UK), but also obtains particle size distributions with a high degree of temporal resolution at the same time. Palas® Fidas® 200 ambient air quality continuous monitoring system is one of the few certified continuous automatic light scattering particle monitoring systems in the world. It is capable of measuring PM2.5 and PM10 using single particle analysis and can be used for workplace and indoor measurements, as well as for environmental monitoring and long-term studies.

The Palas® instrument is more cost-effective and the user can always perform an accurate calibration directly or remotely online with the supplied calibration dust. The Palas® Fidas® 200 ambient air quality continuous monitoring system has been used both indoors and outdoors to provide accurate PM monitoring solutions for different research teams, helping to further the understanding of particulate matter emission patterns.

Palas® Instruments Combined to Achieve Wider Particle Size Monitoring Range
The Palas® Fidas® 200 ambient air quality continuous monitoring system coupled with the U-SMPS 2100 Universal Scanning Electric Mobility particle size spectrometer offers a wider particle size monitoring range, providing real-time dynamic particle size distribution monitoring from 8 nm – 18 μm. In addition, the Palas® particle size spectrometer offers improved particle size resolution up to 128 channels/ten times the particle size. Its support for multiple interfaces and remote access, data and graphical display interface, intuitive visualization of measurement results, all of which provide professional services and excellent solutions for Shihezi University laboratories.

SMPS universal scanning electric mobility particle size spectrometer
The Palas® U-SMPS Universal Scanning Electric Mobility particle size spectrometer and the ENVI-CPC 100 Condensation Particle Counter work together to provide data on the number concentration and size distribution of ultrafine particles. The two instruments can be flexibly combined and networked according to different needs. In addition, the Palas® ultrafine particle monitoring system supports DMA, CPC and other manufacturers’ aerosol electrostatic meters. Remotely controlled and unattended, the system is suitable for long-term aerosol research, climate studies, as well as filtration testing, workplace measurements or exhaust monitoring, helping to meet the challenges posed by a wide range of ultrafine airborne pollutants.
