Global industrialization enables economic growth and prosperity. At the same time, the emissions of automobile exhaust and industrial gases in the ambient air causes a threat to our health. Consequently, a series of health-related standards and norms have been issued and implemented successively. The task is to identify polluted air more efficiently to further improve the risk assessment and control. For this reason, the Respiratory Toxicology Laboratory, affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chose the Palas® Promo® Scattered-light aerosol spectrometer system. With the help of advanced technology from the German experts, aerosol measurement and monitoring in toxicology experiments are carried out. Now, the Promo® Scattered-light aerosol spectrometer system is an essential part of the CDC’s respiratory toxicology research program. The spectrometer system ensures stable monitoring data results in a wide particle size range.
Managing a full scope of experiments
The Respiratory Toxicology Laboratory is a special scientific research laboratory affiliated with the Toxicology Institute of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is responsible for a wide range of studies including environmental pollution, occupational hazards, bioaerosols, inhalation preparations, industrial chemicals, respiratory toxicity-related issues of pesticides, cosmetics, and other substances. Its task is to provide experimental data and technical support for carrying out toxicological assessment and protection research. The laboratory also constructs technical methods and implements monitoring systems.
Palas® Technology for Respiratory Toxicology Experiments
The long experience and rich knowledge of Palas® in the research on aerosol monitoring and measurement was the reason for the Respiratory Toxicology Laboratory to choose the Germans as their partners. The researchers were impressed by the accurate and reliable monitoring results delivered by Palas®. For their experiments they chose the Promo® series of Palas® precisely because of its advantages and features among similar products:
· The independent sensor design is connected to the control unit through optical fiber (50 meters long), which makes the monitoring of aerosols more flexible and convenient.
· Simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters, real-time monitoring of the number/mass concentration of aerosol particles in the test sample, particle size, particle dispersion (particle size distribution)
· Fully meet the aerosol test equipment requirements in “GBZ/T 240.1 Procedures and tests for toxicological evaluations of chemicals”.
Promo® series aerosol particle size spectrometers also have stable technical characteristics:
· Accurate particle size measurement (particle size measurement error within +/- 5%)
· Wide particle size measurement range 0.2um~100um
· Good counts repeat new typically less than 0.5%
· The background count is small.
Promo® is famous for up to 128 size channels per measuring range and a concentration range from < 1 particle/cm3 to 106 particles/cm3.A touch display ensures user-friendly operation. Measurements can be started easily, and all data, such as the current number distribution and the number concentration, as well as 24 further statistical values, can be evaluated and displayed in real time. With Promo as a standalone measuring device (i.e. without external computer) measurements are performed continuously. All incoming data can be stored with a maximum temporal resolution of 1 s. Promo® can therefore measure and save data over weeks independently. For data transfer, Promo can also be integrated into a company network. Promo® has a standard interface and can be controlled by a process control system or by a simple Labview program. For this reason, Promo® is especially well suited for control and monitoring applications. Temperature, humidity and pressure sensors can be connected.
