Palas® Provides Economical and Reliable Solution for Meteorological Observation

Air pollution is one of the biggest challenges facing the world. China has introduced strict rules and standards to significantly improve the air. This involves not only measuring the amount of pollutant particles in the air, but also understanding the composition of the ambient air, which is a core competence of Palas®. The Cloud Droplet Analyzer developed by the German aerosol specialists monitors the interactions and dynamics of aerosols in the atmosphere. The solution supports researchers in their efforts to observe and understand the effects of aerosols on climate, weather, and the environment.

One automated instrument for multiple observation needs

Storm Peak Laboratories in Colorado, USA, installed the Palas® Cloud Droplet Analyzer outdoors at an altitude of 3220 meters. It measures cloud droplets and ice crystals in winter and dust and pollen in summer. The Palas® Cloud Droplet Analyzer measures particle size distribution and concentration with high resolution under real, changing atmospheric conditions. To understand cloud formation under real conditions and distinguish between water and ice particles at extremely low concentrations.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, Germany, which enjoys a high reputation in the field of science and technology, has also selected the Palas® Cloud Droplet Analyzer. The optical sensor will also be used by KIT for ice core research in the AIDA chamber. AIDA is a unique experimental facility for researching the influence of aerosols on climate, weather, and the environment. Aerosol and cloud experiments are performed under relevant atmospheric conditions over a wide range of temperature, pressure, humidity, and cooling rate.

The Palas® Cloud Droplet Analyzer can be used to observe atmospheric composition, cloud formation, ice core formation processes, climate change studies, and more.

Palas® in situ cloud droplet and ice crystal monitoring technology

The Cloud Droplet Analyzer is a high-resolution optical aerosol spectrometer optimized for measuring the size distribution and number concentration of cloud aerosols such as droplets and ice crystals. Based on the measurement principle of optical light scattering (90°) on single particles and high-resolution components, droplets and ice crystals can be distinguished. In addition, the water content of the cloud as well as the average droplet diameter can be determined.

Cloud Droplet Analyzers for atmospheric composition monitoring are equipped with customizable optical sensors. The maximum flow is 5 l/min, the count is 200 p/cm³, and the particle size range is 0.6-40 um or 0.8-100 um (two ranges are optional). The Palas® Cloud Droplet Analyzer helps improve air quality through systematic monitoring to protect people.
